Collection: Sarah Hutt

Sarah is a contemporary landscape artist, and her studio is based at the Royal Ordinance Depot Weedon Bec. She grew up in the Lancashire reservoirs and is well travelled having lived in the British Virgin Isles and on Lake Geneva. Northampton has been her home for the past 25 years, where she lives on the river Nene on her houseboat with her cat Doris.

Sarah Studied Textile Design at Huddersfield and Leeds University and completed a master's degree in education at De Montford. In her early career, she worked as a fabric print designer and colourist before moving into education and ultimately working as a head teacher at a Special school for autistic children.

Sarah draws on her knowledge of print and colour to create her unique style of painting. Coastlines are her main inspiration and can be seen throughout her painting collections. She received the Rugby Art Gallery and Museum Award for Northamptonshire Open Studios 2023 and has recently exhibited and sold at The Royal British Society of Arts annual show held in London and the Royal Cambrian Academy Art Open in Conwy Wales.

“Painting for me, is a time to silence the world and focus on its natural beauty.’

When capturing a landscape, she is often drawn to its stillness and isolation. She paints to create a place for souls to rest. On location, Sarah builds her colour pallet from the natural rocks and fauna she scavenges. Back in the studio, she works to anchor the emotions of a moment sketched, drawing influence from her sketches and layering shapes and textures using collage and acrylic. Sarah thinks less about composition in the early stages, allowing the painting to reveal itself as her work develops. She enjoys never knowing quite how her work will turn out, allowing the creative journey to lead her.
