Collection: Sabari Sen

Born in India and after graduating from  University, Sabari  worked as an animation artist at an advertising agency. This role offered her the freedom to capture the world around her through oil paint and acrylic and experiment with different genres of art. Before leaving for England in 1990, she worked in several advertising agencies honing and refining her painting skills. Sabari’s role as a graphic designer enabled her to develop an in-depth understanding and an appreciation of the intricacies of a broad range of media, including oil painting.

In recent times, she has turned to creating an array of beautifully crafted ceramic pottery which combines a subtle elegance with functionality. Trained at Swanspool Ceramics in Northamptonshire, her style of pottery reveals a perfect blend of Western subtlety of design and Eastern colour and mysticism.

Through her works, be it the paintings that soothe the soul or entice the senses and the ceramic pottery that speaks of the mystical East, she voices her family history and the possibilities of human happiness. In her studio far away from the madding crowd of Delhi with its vibrant colour and music, she finds a companion in the changeable summer skies which reminds her of the joyous time spent in the sprawling house of her grandparents. The granddaughter of a nationally acclaimed poet, Sabari chronicles through her work a closeness with nature and landscapes. What her grandfather did through words, Sabari carries on the tradition with colours and clay. Her paintings and pottery therefore are like poems which speak of the necessity of a sense of belonging, trust and belief.

Today, her creative practice produces both wall art and three-dimensional artefacts. Her aim is to create ceramic pieces that combine the aesthetic of a painting with the functionality and simplicity of purpose associated with a plate, a vase or a jar. Sabari’s work merges with the elegance of Western utility and with the vibrancy of Eastern colour and design.
